GPT-5.6 Sol helps optimize OpenAI's production inference stack
OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol used Codex to help optimize load balancing, production kernels, speculative decoding and runtime configuration, lowering serving cost and improving generation efficiency.
What happened
Event details
OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol autonomously rewrote and optimized production kernels. Together with broader kernel improvements, that work reduced end-to-end serving cost by 20%. Sol also designed and ran hundreds of draft-model experiments whose improvements increased token-generation efficiency by more than 15%, and it analyzed production load to optimize KV cache, batching and sharding settings. The percentages measure different optimization paths and must not be added together; neither is a claim of 20× speed.

Why it matters
The disclosure extends Sol's role from a user-facing model to a production-infrastructure optimization tool and demonstrates a self-improving engineering loop across models, serving software and future specialized hardware.
