xAI launches Grok-2 beta
xAI opened an early Grok-2 preview on X with image understanding and planned enterprise API access; image generation came from the external FLUX.1 model.
What happened
Event details
On August 13, 2024, xAI opened beta access to Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini for X Premium and Premium+ subscribers. Grok-2 covered chat, coding, and reasoning and supported text and image understanding. The enterprise API was planned for later that month and was not available at launch. xAI entered an early build under the name `sus-column-r` in Chatbot Arena and reported that its overall Elo ranking was above Claude 3.5 Sonnet and GPT-4-Turbo at the time. That was a vendor-reported snapshot, not a durable ranking. Image generation on X was supplied by Black Forest Labs' FLUX.1 as an external Grok product integration, not an image output capability of Grok-2 itself. TechCrunch's launch report also noted sparse restrictions on generating political figures, prompting concerns about misleading content and disclosure of AI-generated media.
Assessment
Why it matters
Grok-2 expanded xAI's flagship model from text-only interaction to image understanding and reached paying users directly through X. An early anonymous build ranked highly in Chatbot Arena, but that result was a launch-time snapshot. The model remained in beta, its API was not yet available, and the loosely restricted FLUX.1 image integration quickly drew misinformation concerns.
